Fairytales & Storybooks

(Sorry for being absent for so long! School consumes all of my time, lately, and I have no time to blog. However, I've been gathering a ton of inspirations and here's one of them! Dive into a storybook. Looks by Alexander McQueen, Tsumori Chisato, and Dolce & Gabbana. Also, I watched a wonderful movie today called Hansel & Gretel. It's a korean film and the music was wonderful--the first track on this playlist is from the movie.)

Everything was black and white and quiet.

This past Saturday, my sister and I went to see our first silent film at the Music Box theater in Chicago. We thought we were going to be late, but we found our seats right as the curtains were opening and the film started rolling. There was a live organ player, which really added to the feeling of a real 1920s movie. The film was called Pandora's Box and Louise Brooks was the main character, Lulu. The film is German and it was released in 1928.I swear, I was about to cry as the film started, because I really felt like I was in the past and, well, I certainly love everything from the past. The film overall was amazing and exciting! The costumes, of course, were divine and flowing and graceful and overall amazing. While I was watching this and definitely immersed in it, I began to believe that the world and everything around me really was like a black-and-white silent film, and somehow, I accepted that.
Lulu will ultimately have a mark on my wardrobe...I love her makeup and  hairstyle(though I could never get my hair like this). The 1920s was a time of freedom and women in this time, in my opinion, dressed in some of the most unique and beautiful clothing. Hopefully, there will be a flapper post (if I can get my hair to comply)...

Here are a few looks that remind me of the female look in Pandora's Box

Summer.

Summer, so far, hasn't lived up to it's expectations. When school got out, I was planning on going swimming everyday, while being with friends. The more realistic outcome has presented itself from the start, though. I usually spend my days in my room, listening to Beach House and Air while I glue cutouts from magazines onto cardboard paper or study Japanese Kanji. Every now and then, when I do get to  see my friends, it's a treat and we always have a great time. So, I guess, it's better off that I don't see them everyday, because then it wouldn't be as special. However, I miss school terribly and wish it would start sooner.

This weekend, my mum and I went on an outing to our favorite clothing shop, Salvation Army. Though it's kind of dirty and holds tons of raggedy clothing, I tend to always leave with a bag of treasures. My closet is made up of mostly thrifted/vintage clothing with some exceptions from AA or Forever21(which I vowed to never shop from again, due to seeing many a girl with the same clothing as I). I feel that thrifting is the best way to shop, because you're not only reusing clothing, which is great, but you also find that most of the time,no one has the same clothes as you. However, I will not deny that I stare at designer clothing with googly eyes everyday..but, with me being a girl in high school, with neither a job nor fortune, I can only imagine having such clothes/shoes/accessories.For now, I buy old/used clothing to my hearts delight!

I want to wear mini-dresses and go on adventures, too.

The first time I saw Moonrise Kingdom, I was downtown with my sister. We had both been waiting  to see this movie for weeks and when we were finally seated in the movie theater, we couldn't contain out girlish laughter and wholehearted excitement(who can?). I had never seen a Wes Anderson film before and this was the best impression I could ever have. Five minutes in, the movie had captured me with it's era and overall amazing-ness. Do you know that feeling you sometimes get when you see a really good movie and you can't stop thinking about it, even when you're trying to go to sleep? This movie was all about that. After seeing it once, I saw it two more times, once with a friend and once by myself, because I wanted to experience the beauty of this film just by myself for a change. Immediately after my first time seeing of this film, I bought the soundtrack and listened to it for days, my heart aching because I know it's probably too late for me to have an adventure like this. My two favorite tracks on the soundtrack are probably Cuckoo and Le Temps de l'Amour by Françoise Hardy. Especially the latter; it makes me want to dance with my eyes closed and sip peach juice, or something else fanciful like that.

The costumes are another thing that caught my eye along with everything else in this film. I've always been interested in clothing from different eras and it's not often that movies set in the past hit theaters(especially an amazingly filmed one like this). The '60s for me is made up of the stereotypical things: go-go boots, eccentric mini-dresses and big hair. The thing I love about Moonrise Kingdom is that it showed none of that. This shows how it was to really live in this era, in a small, normala( yet not normal)town away from the fads of the time. I love this film so much, and somehow, seeing it three times isn't enough. I miss it terribly.

You can smell the new girl in the air.

Hello, there! My name is Dylon and this is my first, official post to commemorate the start of this blog! I hope  it goes well, and I plan to spend plenty of time on it. I plan to post a lot of style, literature, etc, both historical and modern.  Since it's summer, I will have plenty of time to work on this blog. I created it in hopes of connecting and being even more exposed to some of my favorite blogs and the people who run them.
